Uranium Watch, located in the United States, is opposed to the transportation and disposal of irradiated nuclear fuel and other types of nuclear waste--that is not produced in Australia--in Australia. Australia should not be a dumping ground for this waste, particularly on Aboriginal lands. The transportation of irradiated nuclear fuel is highly risky, particularly fuel that is stored in thin-walled canisters. With many countries producing high level nuclear waste, but none with a permanent facility for its disposal and long-term care, the continued operation of nuclear reactors and production of waste is beyond comprehension. If a country wants to produce nuclear waste, it should take responsibility for its disposal and care.
